Central Air Conditioning Systems Need Regular Tune-Ups – Chesapeake, VA

Darren Kincaid - Monday, June 20, 2016

As a home owner, include in your summer plans an air conditioning tune up. One way to keep you air conditioning costs down be sure to have regular maintenance performed on you HVAC system.

It's very important to have tune-up and maintenance done on central air conditioning systems at least once a year. Among the benefits of having them done regularly is the significant reduction in energy consumption, which can be up to 20% or more.

A proper 24 point central air conditioner tune-up includes inspection, lubrication, calibration, and cleaning. The entire system is completely checked to make sure that the air conditioning system is operating properly and efficiently.

The system is also cleaned, including the unit outside your home. The coil is washed and cleaned, as is the blower compartments. Having 1/16 of an inch of dust or dirt accumulated on your central air conditioners blower wheel can reduce your system's efficiency by 40% or more. Additionally, the cooling coil, drain pan, duct system, and condensate drain lines are thoroughly cleaned.

Here is the bottom line, a central AC tune up will extend the life and maximize the efficiency of your air conditioning unit. If is not regularly and thoroughly cleaned, it will deteriorate rapidly, significantly reducing its efficiency, and its lifespan.

Summer Air Conditioning Tips – Chesapeake, VA

Darren Kincaid - Wednesday, May 25, 2016

Hot summer weather is here with high temperatures and high humidity. Here are some ways to stay cool and save energy at the same time. Central Plumbing and Heating can help you save money on your summer utility bills by following these energy saving tips to reduce use this summer.

  • Install a clean the air conditioning filter on a regular basis in the summer and replace or clean it monthly. Dirty filters cause the equipment to work harder and use up to five percent more energy.
  • Set the air conditioner thermostat at 78 degrees. Each degree below 78 adds about eight percent to your cooling costs.
  • Use fans, both portable and ceiling, whenever possible to help circulate air and reduce the amount of air conditioning you need. Because they are smaller wattage, they only cost a dollar or two a month to operate.
  • Set your thermostat at a higher temperature while you’re away from home. This way the air conditioner won’t be on as often while you’re out.
  • Wash dishes, use the oven, and do laundry during cooler temperatures. These create heat and moisture that put an extra strain on the air conditioner. Vent clothes dryers to the outside and use kitchen exhaust fans to get rid of excess heat.
  • Keep direct sunlight out as much as possible. Close curtains, shades and blinds to hold down the temperature inside. Consider light-colored roofs, outside walls, drapes and solar screens that reflect the heat.
  • Weatherstrip doors and windows to prevent expensive air leaks. Make sure all windows and doors are closed when the AC is on.
  • The attic should be properly ventilated to prevent excess heat build-up, which causes your cooling system to work harder.
  • Insulation is important and can pay for itself by lowering your cooling costs by as much as 20 percent.
  • Air conditioning equipment should be inspected and serviced annually by a licensed HVAC contractor so it runs at maximum efficiency.
  • Be sure the damper is tightly closed on a fireplace to prevent air loss.
  • Keep furniture and draperies away from air vents inside the house. Air should be allowed to flow freely.

Darren Kincaid - Tuesday, May 10, 2016
