Save Money On Utilities and Stay Cool This Summer – Chesapeake, VA

Darren Kincaid - Monday, April 11, 2016

The summer is on the way. The average American home spends almost 20 percent of its utility bills on cooling.

To help you and your family stay cool, comfortable and save energy, here are a few simple steps.

Use Ceiling Fans. Run your ceiling fan to create a cool breeze. If you raise your thermostat by only two degrees and use your ceiling fan, you can lower cooling costs by up to 14%. When you leave the room, remember to turn off the fan.

Maximize Shade. Pull the curtains and shades closed before you leave your home to keep the sun from overheating the inside of your home. You can also move container trees and plants in front of sun-exposed windows to serve as shade.

Find the Best Thermostat Settings. If you have a programmable thermostat, program it to work around your schedule—set it a few degrees higher when no one is home, so you are not cooling an empty house.

Reduce Oven Time. Use a microwave or grill outside instead of oven cooking, when you can. Ovens take longer to cook food and can make your house warmer.

Check Air Conditioner Filters. Check your cooling system air filter every month. If the filter looks dirty, change it. A good rule is to change the filter at least every three months. A dirty filter will slow air flow and make the system work harder to keep you cool and waste energy. Also, remember to have your HVAC system service done annually to ensure it’s running at optimum efficiency for money and energy savings.

Plug Leaking Air Ducts. As much as 20 percent of the air moving through your home’s duct system is lost due to leaks and poor connections. Seal duct work  and make sure that connections at vents and registers are well-sealed where they meet the floors, walls, and ceilings. These are common locations to find leaks and disconnected duct work.

Indoor Air Quality is Important to your Health – Chesapeake, VA

Darren Kincaid - Monday, March 07, 2016

Now that winter is drawing to a close, indoor air quality should be a top consideration. In warmer weather, indoor air quality is affected by mold, bacteria, carbon monoxide, radon, and volatile organic compounds (VOC),  Controlling the source of the air is the primary method for improving indoor air quality.

We spend more than 90% of our time indoors, yet the more time we spend indoors the higher we are subject to pollution and increased health risk such as asthma.  The reason for this is ndoor air pollution levels can be up to 100 times higher indoors than those outdoors.

Mold, dust and pollen are not the only biological contaminants that negatively affect indoor air quality. Pests like cockroaches, rodents and dust mites have a large impact on the air we breathe and can pose a serious health threat.

We take the air we breathe for granted. Clean air is important, especially indoors, where air filtration and ventilation systems may not always be working efficiently. Poor indoor air quality can have a considerable impact on our health.

But you can clean the air in your home so that you don't have to put up with the sometimes dangerous symptoms of poor indoor air quality. For more information contact Central Plumbing and Heating.

Buying a New Furnace - Chesapeake, VA

Darren Kincaid - Friday, February 12, 2016

It may be February, but winter is not over. Most people wait until after the winter to replace the furnace, but you may be one of the unfortunate ones who has to replace your furnace now. If you must replace your furnace now, be sure your heating contractor conducts a comprehensive analysis of your home and your home's heating and cooling needs.  Your friends at Central Heating and Plumbing have been expertly doing just that for 40 years and counting!

Here are some little known facts about HVAC sizing.  A furnace that is too large leaves gaps in temperature as it turns on until it catches up with the thermostat. The house ends up cooling down until the next cycle and creates an inconsistent temperature. A properly sized furnace is mandatory to properly regulate temperature.

Efficiency can vary drastically depending on price, which means that if you pay more up front now, you'll still enjoy lower heating bills for 10 or 15 years.

Many homeowners get confused over purchase agreements and warranty information. Central Plumbing and Heating is a long-established and reputable furnace installation company who will guarantee both your purchase agreement and warranty.  Regular maintenance of your heating and cooling system will keep the furnace performing like it should, keep your family warm, and lower your energy bills.

Get the Most From Your Heating System – Chesapeake, VA

Darren Kincaid - Thursday, January 21, 2016

Winter temperatures have finally struck, Chesapeake, VA and it is not going to get any warmer real soon. Temperatures are guaranteed to go nowhere but down as the weeks progress.

Of course, this makes now as good a time as any to get some advice on keeping your home nice and warm for the rest of the winter.

Remove clutter: Boxes, storage units and clutter near the furnace can obstruct air flow, preventing your system from working as efficiently as possible.

This isn't just a money-saving issue, it's also a safety point. Be very cagey about what you put near a heat source.

Have HVAC equipment serviced: An annual service inspection of your home's heating system by a certified technician will ensure that equipment is in good condition and operating at peak performance.

Change that air filter: Change your filter monthly or as instructed by the manufacturer.

Add a humidifier: Moist air feels warmer than dry air. A humidifier could allow you to keep your thermostat at a lower setting without compromising comfort.

Install a programmable thermostat: A programmable thermostat automatically adjusts your home's temperature to provide the most comfort when your home is occupied.

Steps to Eco-Friendly Home Heating - Chesapeake, VA

Darren Kincaid - Thursday, January 14, 2016

Winter is in full swing in Virginia, let’s talk about home heating.

The steps to saving energy are often small and incremental. Reducing your home’s energy use for heating can save you money, improve health, and even increase your home’s comfort.

According to the Department of Energy, heating is the biggest home energy cost, and is around 45% of our total energy consumption.

Reducing the energy used for home heating is the single most effective way to save household money.

To keep the air healthy, indoor temperatures in the winter should range between 65-70 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity levels 30-60%.

How can we reduce our heating bills while effectively maintaining health and comfort?

We have two options: repair or replace the HVAC.

There are three aspects to any heating system that can be fixed or changed out: source, distribution, or controls.  It is important to focus on the big picture. Don’t simply swap out that old furnace (source) without sealing your ductwork (distribution), or you will just keep sending expensive heat into the crawlspace through all the duct leaks (dollars).

Also, make sure your installer calculates the size of the system properly, so that the output matches the heat loss of your home.  An oversized heating system does not optimize efficiency, and if undersized you will not stay comfortable.

A significant energy reducing step can be found by utilizing Heat Pump technology. A heat pump works just like a refrigerator, but in reverse.  An air-source heat pump can deliver 1.5 to 3 times more heat energy to a home than the electrical energy it consumes. This is possible because a heat pump moves heat rather than converting it from a fuel.  Air-source heat pumps are ideal for our climate.

A heat pump is a good choice when replacing your existing ducted furnace. Or if your current system does not have ducts, such as baseboards or wood heat, a ductless mini-split heat pump provides a very efficient alternative or addition.

While heat pumps are a significant investment, in many cases rebates help offset the cost.

Keep in mind that many heating systems require regular servicing in order to maintain maximum efficiency.

However you choose to improve upon your current heating system, remember you will be living more comfortably and consuming less energy; contact Central Plumbing and Heating.
